–Hi Kirk Blake – Scouting and Development on KULT Australia. First of all, hope you’re ok, thanks so much for accepting this quick interview, we know you are so busy right now, thanks for your time, how do you involved with scouting new faces. How do you started ? 

Kirk: How I got started ?  I started working for John Casablanca’s in Canada when I was 21, I worked as an agent/scout there for 2 year.

I have scouted for a few agencies in Canada in the late 80’s and 90’s before I moved to Australia (Sydney) where I was scouting for Chadwick models (owner: Peter Chadwick) for 4 years before scouting for EMG models and “Vikki Barrack” for nearly 15 years.   

During this time I was always head hunted by agencies in Asia and America to scout for them.

–How have you seen the industry change since that time, (when you start) especially the ways models are booked?

Have I seen the industry change ??  It has changed in so many ways its incredible, booking systems, the internet, digitals not polaroids, instagram… the list goes on.  But scouting never changes for me… I like to get out and put in the time at events and malls, this is the best way to see people, I have found now a few models on Instagram and some have found me this way…so I can’t Knock this social forum for helping me. 

-How do you scout talent, (I know every cute Aussie on the corner), how do you know who will be successful? It is hard?

How do I scout?… I actually plan, I am always thinking where there will be masses of people, example… Central Station early mornings. Shopping Malls are good , but you can’t ignore living in Australia that the one great place is the beaches surrounding the city.

How do I know someone will be successful?  Million dollar question ??  Well I can only say that when I spot someone I have an initial reaction of “yes” and then of course you have to chat to them, get a sense of their personality and a little bit about them…. but there is a thing that people call “X factor” there is an element of truth to this , however there are some fundamental qualities a boy has to have … “height, body condition .. ie .. hair teeth skin..

But usually I just go with my gut feeling.

-Let’s talk about Fashion Week, we now know MB Australia Fashion Week is getting stronger and stronger every season, does your models participated on the event? What are your thoughts on this?

This is a super event showcasing Australian Designers … Models now come from all over the world to do these shows and to be seen by ‘Major’ clients… We always have models in these shows of course representing the best Male models in Australia.

-How do you prepare your models for fashion week?

The models are always prepared and have usually walked for shows around the world, because now having some of the biggest boys come to Australia to model, its  great for designers to choose from the best.

-How do you ensure that your guys get booked for the shows?

You can’t ensure any model gets book… if the client likes them and they are professional.. they get booked.

-What is the office environment like, is it crazy hours for everyone? (during MBFWA)

The office environment is  always crazy… no such thing as a 8 hour day… and even when we are not at the office we sleep with our phones because of the time difference around the world and having to communicate on matters that need to be resolved ASAP.

-How do you keep up the confidence of the models during that time? (MBFWA)

How do you keep the confidence… at this stage the models are all confident.

-How do you decide which publications and jobs you allow your models to work with?

How do you decide on publications or jobs… this is very key in the direction of any model, it is about knowing your clients likes and dislikes , but also choosing the right magazines and photographers who can advance a models career .

-Tell us about you’re new faces on board, we have seen some of them on magazines, lookbooks…

Who contacted me on Instagram from the Ukraine…. I thought at first… no he is joking, he has to be with an agency already or someone is playing a joke… well no it true he was unsigned and undiscovered but had found me. So at this point Kult Hamburg organised him to start in Hamburg modelling… teaching him about castings and learning to pose, and now he is on to his first market to learn with  Daman http://www.damanmgmt.com/   which is the best for men in Istanbul….  

-Oh don’t you forget telling us your experience about model sensation Jordan Barrett!!???

Jordan Barrett.. Jordan Barrett I found when he was 13 years old, I knew instantly when I tell him that he was going to be a future star… but funny when I first started showing people , there was a lot that went no or didn’t even reply back  (over-seas agents)    But the first magazine was Client Magazine which I had a photographer  Thor Engelstad  from the Gold Coast shoot him for a submission for the magazine but they used him for the back cover.. which was very cool for a young kid. Jordan is a great kid and he works very hard, his schedule is insane … one only has to look at his Instagram to see he is never in any spot for very long. He will do really well…. But keep watching I have so many new boys which have not yet been shown to anyone… as its key to launch them at the right time.

-But you gotta tell us what is your most popular guy on your board?

All I can say is that for now I have some of the most amazing new faces.  

-Where do you see the industry headed,  what can we expect?

Where is the industry going??  to be honest it seems to be picking up pace and models will come and go really fast if they don’t  keep themselves in incredible shape and professional.

-Advise for aspiring models?

But this is true with anything in life, those who put in the hard work reap the rewards.

How can you fixed if the model has a broken hair? Sorry, but you can’t, you just have to choose another one. Because is so damn hard to fixed hair on Photoshop.

Picture this, your client came over and asked you to invoice new shots for a Long Hair Campaign but with guys!, well this is what are you going to do:

You have to talk with your client and then your hairstylist what is the proposal of the Campaign, after that, let’s work. Your hairstylist will do the best work possible, ’cause now depends on your shots, modeling his long hair and hairstylist’s work.

Back to model Alex Libby,  his looks is a beautiful Californian masculine guy above 25yo, in the pictures he has wet hair, which is fine, because this is only to present actually looks of the model.

To inspire you, watch over the poses, the attitude, the smile, the body language Alex possess. Look how masculine -sorry to use this word- but it is what it is, look how masculine grabs his hair. Notice that?

I was not ready enough to write about this subject, but under some circumstances I have to do it.

First of all, I’ve been struggle with space here on WordPress, that’s why I can’t submit any more work, unless I have to pay for another host or more space, and I can’t afford it right now.

Well this subject, took me to this theme, to delete thousand and thousand of pictures and media to try to gain some space to present some of recent work, but I couldn’t finish. Is too much work to do. I mean, it takes too much time, delete every picture and also every post. Yeah WordPress doesn’t put in an easy way.

Anyway, back to the subject, I tried to delete and obviously I could figured it out how wonderful material I was deleting.

From every photographer and male model around the world. Some of them are still on top. And some of them are focusing in another thing, and some of them are dead.

From taken to there, we need to discuss how a male model and photographer needs a blog to exhibit their work. There’s no doubt about it. Even though you name it a blogzine, webzine, photoblog, magazine, or blog, guys who wants to be in front of the lens needs that aim to be explode and exhibited in the right way to have a career.

History of Blogging

The original blogs were updated manually, often linked from a central home page or archive. This wasn’t very efficient, but unless you were a programmer who could create your own custom blogging platform, there weren’t any other options to begin with.

And then, in 1999, the platform that would later become Blogger was started by Evan Williams and Meg Hourihan at Pyra Labs. Blogger is largely responsible for bringing blogging to the mainstream.

Back in the days, before existed Tumblr, Fotolog was one of the most mainstream underground to present any kind of picture including from so many artist and photographer, we could mention MySpace was one of the first social media from the beginning of 2000’s.

Another good example is the purchase of TechCrunch and associated blogs by AOL, which, while not a traditional media source, is one of the oldest internet companies still in existence.

Difference between male models blog and fitness male models

Gay Ok Magazines started to write and focusing on male models to ‘discover’ new faces and criticized the work of many photographers but also given to them huge success.

Like OUT Magazine, Attitude Magazine, French magazine TÊTU, DNA Magazine, to mention a few. They turning viral new muscle models, fitness trainers, but also they write about all kind of artists, movies, galleries, clothing and also gadgets and technology.

The only diference between male models blogs and fitness male models blogs are one of them are dressed and some other are undressed. —Fashionably Male

Blogs like FuckingYoung!, The Fashionisto, Male Model Scene, D’Scene, VanityTeen, and popular platforms models.com and Highsnobiety all conquered fashion scences presenting the best male models, fashion and photography. All of them with hugh success, ’cause they have so much viewers and readers.

If you are willing to be the next face, and if you name is tagged on those platforms, well you’re going in the right track.

Social media to promote male models and photography

I started using Tumblr since December 2010, they are active since 2007 in New York. This platform is a microblogging and social networking website, but since day one, they’ve been blogging male models, new faces, new artist, from mainstream to the big scenario. And Buzzfeed is taking their inspiration from Tumblr.

Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, Vine and Facebook Page are must-need social platforms to connect with people. Don’t forget to use it wisely. And these will change in like 5 years or so.

Have I said too much? there’s so much material on this subject.

They can destroy or taking you to the Fame

But please I recall to all guys who wants to start to modeling for the first time. You really need to be aware of the power of this Social Media and huge powerful platforms, ’cause they can destroy or taking you to the fame.

So there’s no time to be ignorant on this subject. Shirtless selfie pictures in a filthy bathroom are okay, but when you got your dick out…will be around the world.

You can use this kind of platform to gain recognized from people around the world in less than an hour. But also you can be defeated by killing words.

Photographers need to sign a paper with their models to have a ‘real freedom’ to share their work to exhibit to any platform they want to use.
